The Plot, I mean "Pot", Thickens...More on Melamine in Food

What kind of poison are they trying to feed us now???
Do they really think we will believe this? Do they???
How can Melamine in human food be a "good thing"?

Melamine in pet food may not be accidental - USATODAY.com

I rest my case....
Along the lines I previously hinted about, why feed commercial pet foods that contain ANY synthetic ingredients? It just doesn't make sense.
Laboratory-produced "fillers" such as gluten's, whey's, synthetic vitamins, they are all potentially harmful to us and our pets.
Keep in mind, that with high probability, the same gluten's and fillers found in the dog and cat foods, both moist and dry, may also be found in bird foods, as well as foods for other species of animals. How many birds have died from this same thing that have not been reported because the investigation is ongoing???...Guarantee..."We have not heard the last of this yet!"

What Harmful Ingredient Will They Find in Moist Pet Food?

It is my experiential opinion that believes preservatives will be found in the wheat gluten used in wet and moist pet foods that have allegedly killed so many pets across the nation in the last few months, weeks. I personally have no proof that this ingredient will be found in these foods, just an educated, experiential guess.
Wheat gluten, besides being an indigestible protein, of absolutely no value to us or our pet's nutritional requirements, also often contains preservatives that have been added to the gluten to keep it from "spoilage". These preservatives are added by the manufacturer of the wheat gluten, not the manufacturer of your pet's food. But the manufacturer of your pet's food takes the blame because it is that manufacturer's responsibility to KNOW what "hidden" ingredients are added to the ingredients they make your pet's food from and with!
Wheat gluten, or any gluten for that matter, is nothing more than a cheap filler that makes your pet feel full and satisfied.
Do you really need such ingredients in your pet's food?

Update 3/23/07-Now the authorities believe "rat poisoning" was found in the tainted pet foods that allegedly several animals have died from eating. Arsenic is one kind of rat poison and it is also used as a "hidden" preservative....hmmmm.

Healthy Bird Food

What defines "healthy companion bird food"?

Is it that the bird actually eats the food? Is it that the "food" contains all of the necessary nutrients according to pre-defined, scientific nutritional standards? Even IF the nutrients are synthetic, in other words, produced in a laboratory? Is it that the "food" contains corn, wheat and/or soy as the primary ingredients? Is it that the food is pellet-ized or left in its original form? Is it that the "food" contains a few number of ingredients or a large variety?

Research is still out to debate all of the above. But pure and simply, "healthy companion bird food" would contain a very large variety of whole-food ingredients, as much in their original form, as found in nature, as possible. The "food" would contain such a large variety of ingredients that the synthetic nutrients would not be necessary. The "food" would be so close to what the bird would find in the wild that it has a recognizable form, taste, smell and look. It would be so close to natural that the ingredients, left as undisturbed as possible, would not be powederized and then mechanically shaped by equipment that imparts metal toxicity to the wet food before high heat extrusion. Powdered ingredients loose almost all of their nutritional properties. The tiny particles allow for "leaching out" of the macro-nutrients as well as the micro-nutrients. High heat destroys much of the digestive enzymes and many of the vitamins. The only nutrients that have any chance to remain in-tact are the minerals and a few of the heat resisitant vitamins.

Also, look for bird food that contains mostly organic ingredients with no preservatives. Science is learning that organic foods are higher in nutrition and taste better too! The lack of preservatives decreases the amount of "toxin acitivity" in the living organism that ingests the food. The lack of synthetic nutrients such as vitamins and supplements, in whole-food, organic and naturallly wild-crafted foods, may actually contribute to a longer life span. Research is indicating that synthetic nutrients may not be reliable in aborsption or metobolism. Some synthetic nutrients may overload in the system, while some may not contribute enough real nutrients that have natural integrity, causing an imbalance in overall nutrition.

Next time you look for "healthy companion bird food", try a food, albeit a little more expensive, that insures quality nutrition with less chemicals, less distortion of original ingredients and contains a large variety of whole-food ingredients. A little pricier up front, but maybe less trips to the vet in the long run!

Jessica Lunsford and Jessica's Law

It's about time all of us stood for something and Jessica's Law gives us a perfect and indisputable cause to take a stand on!
Touched by molestation in our own family, many times, this law rings true to my heart. Many years ago when our family was forever affected by this horrific crime, not very much was being done to protect the innocent. No one talked about molestation. Many of us even thought it was
just a part of growing up", and that almost everyone endured this act of betrayal and violence both physically and emotionally. It was treated as though nothing had happened and no one dared to speak the truth. The very victims were cast out of families as though they themselves were the perpetrators.

Today, things are a changin' and people, the very people who's lives have been irreversibly changed by molestation, are speaking out, getting up and stomping on this crime against humanity.
I personally tip my hat to Mark Lunsford for decidingly marching his campaign right on up to the doors of our federal government. Hooray for such a brave man! Kudos to such a man as Mark who would unabashedly cry out for help in his mission in honor of his daughter, Jessica.
While it is true that good morals and ethics begin in our own homes, still for those who have not been taught those morals and ethics, or for those who willingly sinned against those morals and ethics, government intervention is a required force. For those who will repeatedly crash the lives of innocent children for their own greedy satisfaction, we need a place to forever remove them from society. Statistics prove over and over and redundantly over that these beasts cannot be rehabilitated.
Think about it, if they never lived by the same morals and ethics most of us do to begin with, why would they begin living those principals after getting for themselves a taste of the addiction that satisfies the most evil in their souls? It's just not going to happen.
PLEASE, DO something to help all of us who have been affected by molestation by protecting your own family from knowing what we know, and living what we live, every day of our lives.....Visit Jessica's website and TAKE ACTION on the part of EVERY child both far from you and CLOSE TO YOU!

The Spiraling Effects of Spirulina And The Parrot

Passion Tree House, LLC research has found a possible link between "toe-tapping", aka involuntary muscle movements, and the use of spirulina in the diet.

As it turns out there is an amino acid found in extraordinary abundance in spirulina that could contribute to companion birds and their "OCD-like" behavior patterns such as involuntary "toe-tapping", "jumping", "dancing", "wing-flipping" and even insidious scratching, possibly even feather plucking and skin mutilation.

Without giving away the name of the amino acid, (be sure to visit our website and sign up for our BirD-elicious! Chronicles for more info in next month's newsletter), let's just say that birds may not be able to metabolize and absorb this particular essential amino acid properly. The result is a build up of this amino acid in the system which can lead to a "chemically induced" form of mental retardation and obsessive-compulsive behaviors, as well as interfere with the proper formation of another amino acid, tyrosine. If tyrosine is not properly formed, less tryptophan is produced. This can induce emotional agitation which can further increase the involuntary muscle contractions or spasms, similar to chemically induced Tourette's Syndrome, if you will.

In addition to the behavior patterns, lack of tyrosine can also cause discoloration in feathers. Again, if the particular amino acid that we are speaking of, which is a secret for the sake of this blog and the sake of our next month's BD Chronicles, doesn't get properly metabolized or absorbed, tyrosine doesn't get produced and can negatively affect the color of feathers, especially in the Eclectus parrot.

Buyer beware! Many bird foods contain "aspartame". Aspartame, many times, contains very high amounts of this particular amino acid that needs to be avoided in companion bird diets. But aspartame is not the only ingredient that contains this amino acid. There are some foods to avoid as well.
