And If Palm Nuts Are Not Enough...Try Palm Fronds!

In many laboratory studies researchers are finding that not only are palm nut fruit, palm oil and palm nuts good for our parrots, but the very fronds of the palm tree are equally as important in parrot diets!

But then, so is lemongrass, papaya shoots and green chiles! Research has learned that all of these items have something in common that is not only healthy, but extremely essential in good heart health and liver function, polyphenols and polyphenols in the form of [bio]flavonoids.

These polyphenols help to retard the oxidation of LDL's or otherwise known as low density lipoproteins, the bad fats. In addition to retarding the oxidation, a good thing, they also cause vascular relaxation allowing blood to flow more freely through the veins and arteries, what is needed to avoid atherosclerosis, known as "hardening of the arteries". And, in liver function, they help to "neutralize" the bad fat so that the liver can properly filter and excrete.

So next time you are about to throw out your palm fronds, or think they are only good for nesting material, think again. Offer them as a fun toy, that in disguise, is a healthy treat for your feathered companion!
